Sunday, September 22 – Saturday, September 28, 2019
(Phase 2 Activity):
  • Loading of jacking equipment on the sectional barges in anticipation of the bridge jacking operation at pier 12.

  • Relocation of barges from span 6 to span 7.

  • Installation of demolition shielding under span 6 and 7 on the north bridge, between the fascia girder and the underside of the existing bridge.

  • Cutting of 3/4" shim plates for jack placement. 

  • Removal of existing pedestrian railing, installation of handrailing and demolition of existing sidewalk on the north bridge at spans 1, 3 and 4.

  • Removal of sections of the pedestrian sidewalk and excess rebars between the west abutment and pier 1.

  • Installation of overhangs between the west abutment and pier 1.

  • Cleaning of all debris on existing sidewalk on the north bridge in preparation for the start of demo operation.

  • Installation of 4X4 deck supports for proposed sidewalk.

  • Installation of the remaining pedestrian/bicycle detour signs.

  • Please note: the north bridge sidewalk was closed as of September 21 and demolition of the north bridge sidewalk has begun.

Sunday, September 15 – Saturday, September 21, 2019
(Phase 2 Activity):
  • Placing, grading and compacting GAB on the proposed ramp C and pedestrian connection on NPS property.

  • Assembly of temporary demo shields and overhangs on the closed section of the bridge (westbound) for the demo and removal operation of the approach slab on the east abutment of the bridge.

  • Removal of the approach slab at the east approach.

  • Assembly and installation of the demo-shields for the underside of the existing pedestrian sidewalk between pier 2 and pier 3/span 3.

  • Assembly of overhangs at pier 1 and the contractor’s yard for future placement on the pedestrian’s sidewalk.

  • Removal and relocation of the sectional barges from spans 2 and 4 to the shore on the southwest side of the south bridge.

  • Installation of the posts for the security fence (bridge access deterrent at the east abutment).

  • Removal of the demolition shield from the underside of the newly placed median overhead sign structure (span 3) and parging of the underside of the deck.

  • Grading of the slopes on both sides of the paved pedestrian connection on NPS property and at ramp C.

  • Installation of stabilizing matting on proposed pedestrian drainage ditch connected to the bioswale at NPS property.

  • Wrapping of epoxy coated steel in protective white plastic sheeting as it was stockpiled on site.

  • Cleaning and removal of trees and grass from the existing sidewalk on the south side of the bridge in anticipation of the pedestrian detour from the north to the south bridge.

  • Welding of supports and spacers.

  • Pepco disconnected the feed from the existing ITS cabinet at the entrance of temporary ramp A.

  • Removal of the existing railings and sidewalk demolition along the north bridge at the west abutment.

  • Installation of detour signage for the pedestrian/bicycle detour and the north bridge sidewalk was closed as of September 21, 2019.

  • Demolition of the north bridge sidewalk.

Sunday, September 8 – Saturday, September 14, 2019
(Phase 2 Activity):
  • Installation of the proposed jacking angles at pier 12/spans 12 and 13, interior and exterior girders on the north bridge (all bolts were inspected using a calibrated torque wrench).

  • Removal of 16 existing rivets in the top and bottom flanges of the existing floor beams at pier 1.

  • Drilling for proposed jacking angles at pier 1/spans 1 and 2, interior and exterior girders.

  • Cutting and grading the proposed ditch connected to the bioswale; grading the slope and hauling excavated dirt material from the bioswale from NPS property.

  • Assembly of demo-shields on the closed section of the bridge (westbound) for the continuation of the demo and removal of the median barriers.

  • Assembly and installation of the demo-shields for the underside of the existing pedestrian sidewalk between pier 2 and pier 3.

  • Demolition of the approach slab at the east side of the bridge.

  • Assembly of overhangs at pier 1 and the contractor’s yard for future placement on the pedestrian’s sidewalk.

  • Fabrication of overhang brackets and boat maintenance under span 1.

  • Tightened and secured the attenuator at the east end of the project in the median.

  • Removal of backwall stone masonry.

  • Removal and relocation of the sectional barges from under span 13 to the shore on the west side of the bridge, including loading the barge with jacking equipment and other material needed for the bridge jacking operation.

  • Mobilization of equipment from NPS property to outside of project.

  • Installation of lane markings at various locations and blacked out existing striping.

  • Installation of stop sign at the exit ramp west bound of bridge and relocation of the other stop sign at the same ramp.

  • Installation of the posts fencing for the security fence (bridge access deterrent at the east abutment).

Sunday, September 1 – Saturday, September 7, 2019
(Phase 2 Activity):
  • Drilling and installation of the proposed jacking angles at pier 13, interior and exterior girders on the north bridge.

  • Removal of 8 rivets from the top and bottom flanges of the existing floor beams at pier 13 on the north bridge.

  • Excavation for bioswale construction and installation of underdrain pipe for bioswale on NPS property.

  • Placing concrete for the proposed PCC Check Dam in the bioswale.

  • Grading for the pedestrian connection path on NPS property.

  • Assembling of overhangs at pier 1 for future sidewalk replacement.

  • Removal of the demo shield from under span 13 (at the new overhead sign structure).

  • Installation of sheeting at the east abutment.
