Sunday, May 26 – Saturday, June 1, 2019 (Phase 1 Activity):
  • Drilling and installation of high strength bolts for the proposed jacking angles at pier 2/span 2 exterior girder.

  • Drilling for the proposed jacking angles at pier 2/span 3 interior girder after removing the existing rivets.

  • Drilling for the proposed jacking angles at pier 4/span 4 exterior girder after removing the existing rivets.

  • Grinding of the tops and bottoms of the proposed jacking angles in order to ensure a proper and snug fit between the flanges of the existing floor beams prior to installation (under span 1 on the south bridge).

  • Excavation and backfilling of manhole on NPS property, using a trench roller for compaction (soil compaction testing performed).

  • Performed probing below the proposed storm drain pipe and undercut unsuitable materials.

  • Relocation of one of the sectional barges from the west side of pier 2 on the north bridge to the west side of pier 4 on the north bridge.

  • Removal of two rivets at the top flange and two rivets on the bottom flange of the existing floor beam at pier 4/span 4 interior and exterior girders.

  • Began working under pier 7/span 8 on both the north and south bridges.

  • Fabrication of the pedestrian railing and historic bridge rails for the north bridge.

Sunday, May 19 – Saturday, May 25, 2019 (Phase 1 Activity):
  • Documentation of the existing drainage structures on the bridge along with the existing expansion and fixed bridge joints on both the north and south bridges.

  • Continued construction of the pedestrian trail connection and the temporary crossovers.

  • Fabrication of the pedestrian railing and historic bridge rails for the north bridge.

  • Continued mobilizing marine equipment on the south side of spans 2 and 3.

  • Delivery and assembling of 10' x 30' sectional barges.

  • Excavation and storm drain pipe installation (placing stone bedding material) from the existing manhole to the proposed manhole on NPS property.

  • Grinding of the top and bottom of the proposed jacking angles in order to ensure a proper and snug fit between the flanges of the existing floor beams.

  • Installation of the demolition shield at span 3 for upcoming demolition of the interior parapets at the existing overhead sign structure locations.

  • Drilling for the proposed jacking angle at the exterior girder.

  • Removal of the remaining pieces of the existing overhead signage and sign structures stored at the west gore area.

  • Removal of the existing rivets in conflict with the proposed jacking angle bolts in the top and bottom flanges of the existing floor beams at pier 2 on the north bridge (including drilling holes and installing bolts).

  • Installation of a temporary access road to the east abutment on the north bridge.

Sunday, May 12 – Saturday, May 18, 2019 (Phase 1 Activity):
  • Inspections for concrete repair work in the closed lanes on the bridge are ongoing.

  • Sounding of the median barrier on the bridge in preparation for the median repairs are ongoing.

  • Preparation of the work platform for the installation of jacking angles at piers 1, 2, 4 and 5 (north bridge) and began the installation of the work platform at pier 1 (south bridge).

  • Installation of the decking for the work platform at piers 1 and 2 (north bridge).

  • Transferred equipment and materials from the shore to the sectional barges at pier 2 (north bridge).

  • Preparation of the jacking angles for stage 2 jacking and replacement operations on the north bridge.

  • Performed test pits for location of utilities between East Capitol Street and the 295 ramps.

  • Location of existing storm drain manholes on NPS property.

  • Trench excavation for storm drain structures on NPS property.

  • Mobilization of storm drain structures from the gore area between ramp I-295 north and ramp I-295 south to the proposed location on NPS property.

  • Installation of demolition shield between the north and south bridges at span 3 for the removal of the existing median barrier.

  • Started fabrication of pedestrian railing and historic bridge rails for the north bridge.

Sunday, May 5 – Saturday, May 11, 2019 (Phase 1 Activity): 
  • Preparation of the platform for the installation of jacking angles at piers 2, 4 and 5 (north bridge).

  • Leveling of dirt ramps and backfilling excavated areas on NPS property.

  • Received a load of steel H-Pile today to be used around the perimeter of the barges.

  • Installation of the 4th Portable Changeable Message Sign (PCMS) on the southwest side of RFK Stadium adjacent to Lot 5 for night work overhead signs removal.

  • Performed test pits for location of utility lines between East Capitol Street and the 295 ramps.

  • Installation of the timber work platform at pier 4 and began installation of the work platform at pier 6 (north bridge).

  • Dismantling, loading and removal of existing overhead sign panels.

  • Please note:  East Capitol Street Bridge (eastbound) was closed for short-term durations as needed during the overnight hours of 9:00 pm to 5:00 am for the removal of signs and structures.
