Sunday, August 25 – Saturday, August 31, 2019
(Phase 1 and Phase 2 Activity):
  • Preparation for Phase II traffic switch anticipated for August 29th, including lane closures and installation of traffic signs (e.g. " Yield, No Merge Area").

  • Placement of concrete for the south bridge median barrier at overhead sign structures.

  • Grading of aggregate base course and bioswale construction along the pedestrian connection at NPS property.

  • Stripping and removal of timber formwork from the back of the new median barrier between the north and south bridges at proposed overhead sign structures.

  • Excavation and forming of the proposed PCC check dams in the bioswale on NPS property.

  • Removal of existing striping (eastbound) and re-painting.

  • Placement of HMA base course on ramps A, B and C of East Capitol Street and at the west side of East Capitol Street.

  • Milling of roadway edge at the gore areas along East Capitol Street (east and west side of the bridge).

  • Removal of 200-ft portable precast PCC barriers and construction zone attenuator from eastbound lanes.

  • Backfilling and grading of subgrade for proposed pedestrian connection at NPS property.

  • Grading and sloping of the existing embankment at ramps A, B, and C, and at the west side of bridge, placing temporary seed and straw mulch.

  • Replacement of lamps in the existing non-working bridge lighting.

  • Installation of jacking angles at pier 13 (north bridge).

  • Fabrication and delivery of pedestrian railing and historic bridge rails for the north bridge.

  • Fabrication and delivery of Phase 2 (north bridge) bridge bearings.

Please note:  the project switched to Phase 2 operations  this woeek on August 29, 2019.

Sunday, August 18 – Saturday, August 24, 2019
(Phase 1 Activity):
  • Installation of formwork for the proposed median barrier for overhead sign structures.

  • Placement of concrete for the proposed median barrier portion of the overhead sign, applying epoxy bonding agent to the existing concrete as needed.

  • Installation of the anchor bolts for the sign structures.

  • Placing of choker layer (sand and gravel) on top of placing double wash stone and 18 inches of bioretention soil on top of choker layer at the pedestrian connection path.

  • Fine grading and re-compacting of GAB on temporary ramps A and B.

  • Excavation for the bioswale and installation of 6-inch underdrain pipe, double washed stone, and geotextile materials for the bioswale on NPS property.

  • Installation of epoxy coated reinforcing steel for the proposed median barrier on the south bridge, east and west of proposed overhead sign.

  • Paving at the median section of the removed median barrier at the east side of the project.

  • Fine grading and rolling subgrade using a drum roller on the proposed pedestrian connection on NPS property.

  • Excavation around storm drain manhole and backfilling.  

  • Installation of one crash attenuator in the median area east of the bridge, at the demo limit of the existing median barrier.

  • Fabrication and delivery of the pedestrian railing and historic bridge rails for the north bridge.

  • Fabrication and delivery of Phase 2 (north bridge) bridge bearings.

Sunday, August 11 – Saturday, August 17, 2019
(Phase 1 Activity):
  • Grading, watering and compaction operations on the pedestrian connection path on NPS property.

  • Backfilling at proposed pedestrian connection path and laying out of the trail on NPS property.

  • Excavation for bioswale construction work on NPS property and installation of 6" underdrain along the bioswale and underdrain connection to the catch basin, placing double washed stone and geotextile materials along the bioswale.

  • Re-staking of the pedestrian connection path and bioswale.

  • Excavation and grading for subgrade at proposed temporary roadway on the west end of the bridge.

  • Installation of deck and median barrier formwork to place concrete at the base of the proposed sign structures.

  • Erecting of rear panel forms for the proposed median barriers for all three sign structures.

  • Application of bonding agent to the edge of the existing deck slab on the north bridge.

  • Installation of the proposed epoxy coated reinforcing steel for the median overhead sign barrier.

  • Completion of 2" electrical conduit tie-in to the median barrier on the west end of the bridge and replacing of the photo cells for all of the light poles.

  • Removal of the temporary generator and placing the light poles back to the permanent Pepco feed.

  • Installation of the proposed chamfer strips and drip chamfer on the bottom of the proposed deck slab.

  • Forming of the proposed edge of deck slab at the proposed 2" joint separating the north and south bridges.

  • Fabrication and delivery of the pedestrian railing and historic bridge rails for the north bridge.

  • Fabrication and delivery of Phase 2 bridge bearings.

Sunday, August 4 – Saturday, August 10, 2019
(Phase 1 Activity):
  • Drilling and installation of the proposed jacking angles at pier 14/spans 13 and 14, interior girders (north bridge). The water tide was too low to access any of the piers in the water. 

  • Installation of timber work platform at pier 14 (north bridge).

  • Relocation of the barge from pier 11 to the east side of pier 13.

  • Grading and placing GAB along temporary ramp C.

  • Grading operations on the pedestrian connection path, along with excavation for bioswale construction work.

  • Installation of silt fence on temporary ramp B (east side of the bridge).

  • Hauling and removal of trench excavation material from NPS property.

  • Installation of PVC conduit between newly installed electrical manhole to the existing median barrier (including concrete testing).

  • Installation of PVC electrical conduit between newly installed electrical manhole to the existing light poles on the eastbound and westbound sides of the roadway (west of the bridge) and placed concrete for encasement.

  • Backfilling of the encased electrical conduit mentioned above.

  • Demolition the existing median overhead sign barrier for sign structure # 2.

  • Removal of demo debris from the demo shield in the median (debris from the removal of the existing median barrier for the sign structure).

  • Installation of a formwork to place concrete at the base of the proposed sign structures. 

  • Fabrication and delivery of the pedestrian railing and historic bridge rails for the north bridge.

  • Fabrication and delivery of Phase 2 bridge bearings.
